Connecting Essays

Connecting Essay 1
This photograph was taken by Jerry Matchett. In this photograph we can see a circular motion made by different coloured glow sticks. It is against a black background which helps the glow sticks stand out and create a sharp outline. This photograph has a sense of fun and excitement to it due to the bright, sharp colours and also that it would be something a child would want to play with. The positive point to this photograph is the contrast created between the background and the glow stick. Also the colours work well together to create balance within the composition.
This photograph was taking by myself. A range of colours can be seen spread across the top corner of the composition. A soft shape has been created which appears to fade as it spreads out more across the composition. A black background has been used to contrast the bright coloured glow sticks. All of the colours are of a same tone which helps add to the softness of the shape which has been created. The lines made by the glow stick appear to subtle apposed to obvious which hides the fact that it is glow sticks.

These two photograph can be seen to connect to one another as they both use glow sticks to create a colourful shape within the composition. Also they have both used colours of the same tone to create balance within the photograph and softness. Lastly both photographs use a black background to contrast the brightly coloured glow sticks.

Connecting Essay 2
This photograph was taken by Bjoern Ewers. In this photograph we can see a large bubble in the centre of the composition. The bubble appears to be of a different shape to a ordinary bubble which makes it look abstract and unreal. Due to the light hitting the bubble, different colours can be seen within it which make it seem more vibrant compared to any other bubble. I feel that this photograph looks space like which relates it its name which is 'orbital'.

This photograph was taken by myself. In this photograph we can see two bubbles which have been captures against a black background. The light is hitting the bubbles which allows us to see a range of colours making the bubble more vibrant opposed to dull which is what they would look like to the human eye. The colours help to make the bubbles look 3D within a 2D photograph. A negative towards this photograph is that i would have wanted the background to be darker.

These two photograph can be seen to connect to one another due to them simply both being of bubbles. Also in both photographs the bubbles are being lit up which allows us to see a range of colours which make them appear more vibrant than a ordinary bubble. Lastly in both the bubbles look 3D although it is a 2D photograph.

Connecting Essay 3
This photograph was taken by myself. In this photograph you can see a apple being dropped into water. It has been captured as it hits the water allowing us to see the splashes that it has made. The black background benefits in making the water and the apple standout and look sharp. A distinguished outline of the apple and the water can be seen which makes the photograph look sophisticated and professional. A negative to this photograph is that drops of water can be seen in the composition, these would have been on to glass in front of the camera.

This photograph was taken by Leon Dafonte Fernandez. In this photograph you can see splashes of coloured water bouncing off a flat surface. The splashes almost create a sculpture of some sort which carries weightlessness and elegance. The vibrant blues contrast against the white background to make the splashes stand out and appear sharp and defined. The splashes in this photograph appear to be posed and that is it still opposed to it being captured in the middle of the motion. The smaller amounts of water appear to orbit around the larger place which indicates a gravitational pull.

These two photographs can be seen to connect to one another due to them simply both capturing a splash in the middle of its motion. In both the splashes appear to be posed within the composition to create a sculpture and elegant look. Also both photograph used the background to its advantage by contrasting the splashes against it to make them standout and appear sharp and defined.

Connecting Essay 4
This photograph was taken by myself. In this photograph you can see the model hair standing up due to her flicking it vertically.Natural colour can be seen throughout the photograph therefore it makes it seem un-posed and natural. Also due to all of the models hair being sharp and in focus, it almost looks as if the models hair has been frozen during a motion and that it naturally stand up like this. The models hair has shaped around her face and also the different tones of her hair can be seen which adds to the softness and weightlessness of the photograph. The corners have been made darker which shapes around the hair and gives a central focus to the photograph.

This photograph was taken by Marc Laroche. In this photograph you can see the models hair to be spread out over the back of her head. The full length of her hair has been lifted to created height within the photograph. The fact that we are unable to see the model face, this keeps the photograph having a neutral feeling and that it is focus more in the hair rather than the model herself. Black and white has been used in the photograph which links the fact that no emotion is being shown. The corners of the photograph are darker which shapes around the hair and gives the photograph a central focus.

These two photograph can be seen to connect to one another due to them both being of hair being in a unnatural position however it appears to be natural for the models. Also in both photograph the corners have been made darker to shaped around the models hair and to also give the photograph a central focus. Lastly natural tones have been used in both photographs which adds the weightlessness and softness of the photograph.

Connecting Essay 5

This photograph was taken by Harold Edgerton. In this photograph you can see a bullet being shot into a apple on a stand. The blue background contrast the redness of the apple and the white sections which have been created where the bullet has entered and left the apple. This would have been at a high speed therefore a fast shutter speed would have been used. This then enables us to see the full impact on the apple from the moment the bullet hits the apple to the moment the bullet leaves the apple.

This photograph has been taken by myself. In this photograph you can see a party popper which has been pulled to expose the streamers. A black background has been used to create a contrast against the brightly coloured streamers. By including the hand in the composition it makes it obvious that it a party popper opposed to streamers being thrown. This motion happens very quickly therefore a fast shutter speed would have been need to capture the streamers leaving the party popper.

These two photographs can be seen to connect with one another as they both capture a extremely fast motion. These both would have required a fast shutter speed to ensure the photograph was successful. Also in both the subject spreads across the composition opposed to just being in one place.
