Shoot No.12 Work Diary

In this shoot I decided that I wanted to photograph the movement of different material being waved in the air.

In my first photograph I have used a black background and two different material which have been waved in the air across the composition. The brightness of the material are able to create a contrast against the black background. The ripples in the material show the movement of the material and the direction in which it is going to move next. When editing this photograph I sharpened it to make the outline of the material more defined against the black background.

In my second photograph you can again se that I have used a black background and two different material which have been waved across the composition. In this specific photograph I have edited it so that the material are in colour and the rest of the photograph is in black and white. This photograph appears more subtle compared to the other which suggest the softness and elegance of the materials.

If I was to continue with this shoot I would like to photograph different materials such as clothing whilst someone moves. I would also like to see whether the photographs work as well with a white background.

Overall Project Evaluation

In this project I chose the theme of freezing motion. This is due to me feeling that I would enjoy photographing high speed photographs and also due to the diversity of the theme. I started of my project by making a mind map of all the possible shoot for freezing motion, this then enabled me to refer back to it for help when planning a shoot. Following this I researched into freezing motion by making a image bank containing 30 images which all related to freezing motion. This allowed me to see a different aspect to freezing motion and influence many of my shoot ideas. Here are some of the things in which I photographed to show freezing motion: Sport, Glow sticks, Party poppers, Bubbles, Balloons, Hair and Water.

I then went on to research in to 20 photograph who focused on freezing motion or high speed photography. This helped me in a way in which I was able to see different photographers ways of showing freezing motion.  I was influenced by many of these photographs as I  wanted to experiment in photographing freezing motion like they had. From my 20 photographer, I chose my 5 favourite to research further into.
I evaluated 4 of their photographs and included and influence and summary section. This showed what I had learnt from the photograph and how my work has been influenced by them. I feel that this helped me with the project as I was able to develop my understanding of different ways to show freezing motion. Lastly I did 5 connecting essay which allowed me to link my photographs with another photograph, by doing  this I was able to identify the different themes, lighting , colours, angles and compositions of my photographs and how they connected to one another.

After each shoot I would make a work dairy which showed two of my photographs from that shoot, whether they be the best two or one of my least successful. I would then evaluated both photograph stating the positive and negatives and how I captured and edited the photograph. My work diary also contained a 'if I was to continue' section which allowed me to reflect on the shoot and take this on board in my next shoot.

As a part of this project I had to complete the following print techniques: Black and white, curves, duo tone, repetition, selective colour, photo joiner, soft focus, cluster and weaving. All of these print techniques allowed me to explore different ways of editing my photographs but also choosing the correct photo to do the print technique to. This was because I realised that not all the print techniques look good on all photographs. This then made me think about which photographs I should use to fore feel the print technique to best it can be. I also had to complete 10 computer experiments and 8 physical experiments. This allowed me explore my photographs in a way in which it is presented and how it is portraying freezing motion.

For many of my shoot I used the studio, although I had previously used the studio for unit 1, I had to develop my understanding of the studio equipment as certain set ups where needed to photograph freezing motion. For example when shooting water, I had to stop any light hitting the water butt still light up the background. I now feel much more confident with the studio equipment therefore I will be able to carry this on into next year.
Overall this project has allowed me to develop my skills in the studio and also find specific type of photography that I like to photograph. Also when completing my computer experiments I was able to develop my understanding and skills of Photoshop. All of the skills and confidence with the studio that i have gain, i will able to use this is my upcoming year in my Unit 3 and Unit 4.

Shoot No.11 Work Diary

In this shoot I wanted to capture the motion of someone running to show  their facial expressions whilst running as well as their body movement. While doing this shoot I wanted to ensure that all of the subject was focused and that none of there body became blurred as this was not the effect that I wanted.
In my first photograph i wanted to capture a medium close up shot of the model running towards the camera to capture his facial expression and movements in the middle of the motion. When editing this photograph i was able to make the corners darker which gave an overall focus to the photograph which is the model. i feel that this photograph was success as none of the model is blurred which is one of the risk when capturing high speed photography.
In my second photograph i wanted to capture a long shot of the model running towards the camera. In this photograph you are able to see the facial expression of the model as well the full body movement of the models as he is running. The model is placed left of the centre which indicates the direction in which he is going to carry on running. Overall i feel that this photograph was success as again none of the model has become blurred which is a problem i was worried about.

If i was to continue with this shoot i would like to capture more than one person running at a time to show the comparison in movement and facial expression. Also i would like to photograph other sports such as swimming or cycling.
